mediocrity vs. gumption

Obstacles

today’s tweetable:

“Remind yourself nobody’s built like you. You design yourself.”  -Jay Z

This is my embarrassing blissed out moment. Last summer I did something I know now was courageous. I pursued my happiness with very little money. I had gumption and told my story how I wanted to create something notable in, of all places, New York.

I had a short time in creating an event in New York and completing my mentorship program at the same time. I broke away from my home in Los Angeles, kissed my husband goodbye, and (repeatedly? Is this word necessary?) left for New York with the full knowledge this may strain my marriage.

mediocrity

I gave everything I got and worked 12 hours a day while in New York. I had no budget for accommodation, cab fare, meals, or anything else for that matter. I had $100 and somehow made it work for 10 days. I did this from February through June of last year.

The results were astonishing! I completed my work and enjoyed my shameless glow. I mastered the art of creating something out of nothing and the art of bragging. The simple formula was answering the delicious question of, “What do I really want?”

gumption

I did what I really wanted and made no apologies for it. I was pushed by family and friends who were both my obstacles and my biggest cheerleaders. I stopped trying to convince  people to get on board with me because I was on board with me for the first time. I cried when I bought each plane ticket saying to myself , “Oh my God, you are really doing this! I’m so proud of you!” There were times when I boarded a plane and wasn’t sure where I was going to stay and then this happened.

My official embarrassed blissed out moment. I can’t even it watch now. It’s hard for me to see myself gush. I will say my skin was glowing and my smile was real. What a gift to have that…

My take-away and result was creating the program I have been dreaming for you. My other take-away is to encourage and live what it means to never give up. Understand the power lies within all of us and we create our future. We are not of our circumstance. Don’t be the limits of what your environment calls for. You create you. Tell everyone about it and they will conspire on your behalf. Get to work. Rock that hustle and go get your glow.
